Kerr Lake Popular Fish - Striped Bass

Due to their large size, striped bass are a favorite of many locals and fishing guides at Kerr Lake. They are plentiful, run in schools and can grow to monster size. During the day stripers hang out in deeper water and feed close to the bottom, 50 feet or deeper. Morning draws the stripers to the much shallower water, look for them around the 20-foot range as they feed on shallow-running schools of bait. The lake is filled with plenty of baitfish and sunfish to to keep the fishery thriving. Being successful at fishing for stripers is a matter of locating schools of bait, and the wolf packs of stripers which are likely to be nearby. Fish finders, and forward facing sonar, are a big help in locating these roaming schools. Live bait is very effective here, and stripers can be caught year round.

Both black crappie and white crappie reside in Kerr Lake, and crappie are a very popular species this year. The majority of crappie caught here are black crappie, but both species grow big and fat. Crappie fishing is on the rise and they can be found in sizeable schools. Crappie always like cover and structure, so locate brush and vegetation. Using a fish finder can help locate schools of crappie, which tend to stack vertically around cover. Live bait and small jigs are the most common method for crappie here. In spring and fall focus on the 8 to 12 foot range. As the crappie move deep in summer and winter, follow points out deep, as well as find ledges near channels in deeper water.

Public Boat Launch Ramps & Landings

County Line Boat Ramp
This two-lane concrete boat launch ramp is located in County Line Park. It includes docks and paved parking.

Flemingtown Boat Ramp
Located at the end of Flemingtown Road, on the eastern side of the lake, this three-lane ramp has three docks and ample unpaved parking.

Henderson Point Boat Ramp
Located in the northeast corner of the NC portion of the lake, this two-lane concrete launch ramp features a dock and plenty of paved parking. Access is via Rev Henderson Road.

Hibernia Boat Ramp
Located in the Kerr Lake State Park, on the west side of the lake, this two-lane, concrete launch ramp has a dock and ample, paved parking.

Kerr Reservoir Boat Ramp
Located at the west end of the Nutbrush Road Bridge, there are two boat launch ramps. One is a four-lane, concrete ramp with two docks and oodles of parking. The other is a single-lane ramp with one dock and paved parking for ten vehicles with trailers.

Kimball Point Boat Ramp
Located on Kimball Point, on the east side of the lake, just south of the state line, this is a simple, one-lane, concrete ramp with primitive parking.

Satterwhite Boat Ramp
Located on Satterwhite Point, this is a two-lane launch ramp with a dock. The paved parking is not at the ramp, but nearby.
