Most Popular Fish Species In Jordan Lake, NC
Largemouth Bass Fishing
Largemouth bass are thriving in Jordan Lake due to fertile water and excellent aquatic vegetation and grasses. These provide cover for both baitfish and bass. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has done a great job maintaining a good largemouth fishery here.
Fishing for bass at Jordan Lake is good in Spring when they work through the spawning process, they find areas in the backs of Morgan Creek, Cub Creek, Overcup Creek, Bush Creek, Parkers Creek, The Haw River, Beaver Creek, Little Beaver Creek, and in the bay behind the Farrington Road Bridge. Robeson Creek is another good area, and includes a launch area for canoes and kayaks. In these protected areas bass stage just outside shallow bedding areas until they are ready to lay the eggs. Look for holding spots in the 8 to 15 foot range. After which, the female move out to deeper water nearby to rest and prepare to feed and gather their strength back.
Many submerged roadbeds cross these creeks and become ideal spots to find bass. The roadbed in the back of Little Beaver Creek also includes the remnants of a collapsed bridge, which is always a good spot to look for bass. Bass also hang out in shallow water all around the lake during summer and during warmer fall days. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap, and around grass use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits.
In deeper water, big worms, jigs and spoons are three good weapons. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure. A good place to headquarter during fishing trips is Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.
Local bass fishing guides, Captain Mario of Fishin Faith Guide Service, Greg Griffin at Greggofish Guide Service, and Joel Munday at Outdoor Expeditions USA consistently finds bass for clients, year round.
Black Crappie Fishing
This is considered by many to be one of the best crappie fishing lakes in the country. The lake supports populations of both black and white crappie, with black crappie being the most dominant, and tend to run quite big here.
Current outlook. This year the fish population is healthy and crappie fishing is excellent, and can be caught year-round. Crappie like cover, structure, shallow brush and vegetation in spring and fall, focusing on the 8 to 12 foot range. In Spring during the spawn, crappie move to quiet backwaters. Brush piles, anywhere on the lake, are likely to have crappie hanging around.
As the crappie move deep in Summer and Winter, follow points out to as deep as 20 to 25 feet. Also look for cover on ledges nearby channels at these depths.
Bridge pilings on most all the bridges crossing the lake, are a great place to find crappie, especially in the cold winter months. Try the bridges on Farrington Road, Beaver Creek Road and the one Highway 64 bridge by Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.
Channel Catfish Fishing
A healthy population of channel cats roam these waters and are eager to feed all around the lake. Gizzard shad, threadfin shad and small sunfish are the primary food source for them in Jordan Lake.
Fish for catfish around any kind of structure in the area. Road beds, creek channels and rocky points are all good places to begin, concentrating on 10 to 15 foot deep, or even slightly deeper at times.
Fishing for catfish at night is always better than daytime, as channel catfish do most of their feeding at night. Choose the right tackle and rigging to increase catch rates. White catfish also reside here, in even bigger numbers.
