Lake Tillery Popular Fish - Largemouth Bass

Largemouth Bass Fishing

Currently, largemouth bass are thriving in Lake Tillery due to excellent fisheries management by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, plus plenty of cover for both baitfish and bass. Lake Tillery holds many bass fishing tournaments year round. Fishing for largemouth bass is good virtually any time they are shallow - in spring, mornings in summer, and during warm Fall afternoons. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap. Around grass use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In deeper water, big worms, jigs and spoons are three good weapons. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure.

This year blue catfish keep getting bigger and bigger in Lake Tillery. Most of the local guides offer fishing trips for catfish, and big blues are the favorite target. The state record is over 125 pounds. Fishing for blue catfish is most often productive summer around any kind of structure. The river end of the lake is often the area where the bigger catfish are caught. Road beds, creek channels and rocky points are all good places to begin. Use a slip sinker or Carolina rig with cut bait or other popular catfish baits. Other cats in the lake include channel catfish and flathead catfish.

Using a fish finder can help locate schools of crappie, which tend to stack vertically around cover. In spring and fall focus on the 8 to 12 foot range. As the crappie move deep in summer and winter, follow points out deep, as well as find ledges near channels in deeper water. White crappie, in smaller numbers, also make this lake their home.

Public Boat Launch Ramps & Landings

Lilly’s Bridge Access Area
Located just south of the bridge, this is a well appointed boat launch access point. It has plenty of paved parking, three docks and a two-lane concrete ramp.

Morrow Mountain Boat Launch
Located on the west side of the lake, in the northwest corner of the lake, this access point is at the end of Morrow Mountain Road. It is a small, concrete, one-lane ramp with a dock and ample paved parking.

Norwood Boat Access
With gravel parking for over two dozen vehicles with trailers, plus a dock, this two-lane boat launch ramp serves visitors to the west side of the lake via Lakeshore Drive.

Stony Mountain Access Area
It is situated at the south end of Lake Tillery Road, mid lake, on the west side of the lake. The two-lane boat ramp has a dock and paved parking for thirty or more vehicles.

Swift Island Lake Tillery Boat Access
Located at the convergence of Highway 27 and Highway 73, in the east sector of the lake, this is a four-lane, concrete ramp with two docks and tons of paved parking.
