Smallmouth Bass Fishing
Lake Memphremagog continues to deliver very nice catches of smallmouth bass. Many locals enjoy smallmouth fishing, as smallies are tough fighters and very exciting to catch. Smallmouth bass fishing is good virtually anytime they are shallow. Use shallow spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, crankbaits, tube baits and jerkbaits around rip rap. Around grass, use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure with small worms, jigs and spoons. Largemouth bass also reside here in good numbers. Rock piles and points are prime areas for smallmouth as these areas are also home to crawfish. When the lake freezes over, consider ice fishing for smallies.
Yellow Perch Fishing
Yellow perch tend to spawn in the April to May timeframe, and the spawn has been strong for years at Lake Memphremagog. As a result, the lake continues to maintain a very healthy population of yellow perch, which have been a mainstay in the fishery for decades. They are fun to catch in winter when ice fishing as well. Yellow perch are great table fare, and are a food source for many predator fish in the lake. Fishing for yellow perch is simple, their primary diet consists of minnows and other small fish, insects and worms. Yellow perch tend to gather in small groups and hang out on relatively deep structure, near cover and/or drop-offs. Use a small hook and sinker. Bait a small hook with minnows, worms or small jigs using 6 to 10 pound line.
Pumpkinseed Fishing
Fishing for pumpkinseed sunfish is very popular here at Lake Memphremagog. Young and old, beginners and seasoned anglers alike, all enjoy catching a bunch of fat pumpkinseed sunfish. This year, much like recent years, the pumpkinseed population is healthy and always looking for something to eat. Pumpkinseed sunfish fishing is about as basic as fishing gets. Any lighter fishing pole, reasonably light line, small hooks baited with anything edible, creates a great setup. Add a bobber and you can set the depth you prefer the bait to position. Pumpkinseed prefer clear water and hang around brush, rocks, vegetation, docks or any cover available. When the lake freezes over, try your luck at ice fishing.

Crossing the Vermont border into Quebec, Canada is Lake Memphremagog, a 5,800-acre lake at Newport, VT. Only about 10 of the over 40 miles of shoreline are in VT, yet there is plenty to do within the US portion of the lake.
The lake offers excellent fishing opportunities, with a variety of fish species. Smallmouth bass and largemouth bass are abundant and provide quality bass fishing. Anglers also target black crappie in Lake Memphremagog, which are known for their tasty white flesh and exciting fight. For trout enthusiasts, the lake offers ample opportunities to catch a variety of trout species. Rainbow trout, brown trout, and lake trout can all be found in the lake's deeper and cooler waters. The lake is renowned for its atlantic salmon fishery, drawing anglers from far and wide to try their luck at landing one of these prized fish. Chain pickerel and northern pike are also prevalent in the lake. Yellow perch, a popular panfish, are found in good numbers.
Much of the shore within VT can be accessed for fishing from the bank, especially around Prouty Beach and throughout areas of Newport. The lake offers fishing for bass, crappie, walleye, trout, sunfish, perch, salmon and pike - conventionally during the warm months, and through the ice in winter. A concrete boat launch ramp for public use is located at Whipple Point Access Area, on the east side of the lake near the Canadian border. Kayaks, car-top boats and canoes can be portaged from several areas with parking throughout the southern part of the lake.
