Waubay Lake Popular Fish - Walleye

Walleye Fishing

Thanks to good fisheries management by the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, a healthy population of quality walleye are thriving in Waubay Lake this year. May and June tend to be the best time for weekend anglers to catch them. During this time they tend to move shallower and closer to shore. Other times of the year they are more likely to roam around in deeper water. As always, staying close by schools of baitfish. They are eager to feed throughout the lake, but tend to concentrate around structure on points, flats and ledges off the river channels. A proven method for catching walleye here is trolling with spinners tipped with live bait, or trolling with long-billed, deep diving crankbaits. However casting live bait, jigs, worms and spoons also works well at times. When the lake freezes over in winter, ice fishing for walleye can be very productive. Use GPS to locate spots you normally fish during other times of the year.

Waubay Lake Popular Fish - Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Smallmouth bass are a favorite of many locals at Waubay Lake, as they are tough fighters and exciting to catch. Fishing for smallmouth bass is good anytime they are shallow - in spring, during high water, mornings in summer and during warmer fall afternoons. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap, and around grass use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure with small worms, jigs and spoons. Largemouth bass and spotted bass also reside here in good numbers. When the lake freezes over, try your luck at ice fishing.

Waubay Lake Popular Fish - Yellow Perch

Yellow Perch Fishing

Waubay Lake continues to have a very healthy population of yellow perch, which have been a mainstay in the fishery for decades. Yellow perch are great table fare, and are a food source for many predator fish in the lake as well. They make for an excellent fish fry, are a food source for many of the larger predator fish in the lake, and they are fun to catch in winter when ice fishing. These perch are a great way to introduce new anglers to fishing. Fishing for yellow perch is simple, their primary diet consists of minnows and other small fish, insects and worms. Yellow perch tend to gather in small groups and hang out on relatively deep structure, near cover and/or drop-offs. Use a small hook and sinker. Bait a small hook with minnows, worms or small jigs using 6 to 10 pound line.

The lake's diverse habitat, with its many islands, bays, and weed beds, creates an ideal environment for a wide range of fish to thrive.

Walleye fishing is a major attraction at Waubay Lake, and the lake has gained a reputation as one of the best walleye fisheries in South Dakota. Anglers can expect to find good numbers of walleye, particularly during the spring and fall seasons when they are most active. Trolling, jigging, and live bait presentations are popular methods for targeting these elusive fish.

Smallmouth bass is another prized species in Waubay Lake. Anglers can find smallmouth bass around rocky structures, drop-offs, and points. These hard-fighting fish provide an exciting challenge and are a favorite among bass enthusiasts.

Black crappie and white bass are also abundant in the lake. These panfish species offer fantastic opportunities for both adults and young anglers to enjoy a successful day of fishing. They can be found near submerged structures, and anglers often have success using small jigs and live bait.
