Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir Popular Fish - Crappie

Crappie Fishing

Both black and white crappie reside in Sayers Lake, with black crappie dominating the crappie fishing here. They do school together so when you find them you may catch both species. This ia a Panfish Enhancement Waterway, with special regulations for all panfish species, so check with Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for details. Crappie fishing is on the rise and they can be found in sizeable schools. Crappie always like cover and structure, so locate brush and vegetation. Using a fish finder can help locate schools of crappie, which tend to stack vertically around cover. Live bait and small jigs are the most common method for crappie here. In spring and fall focus on the 8 to 12 foot range. The best time to catch crappie tends to be at dawn and dusk. As the crappie move deep in summer and winter, follow points out deep, as well as find ledges near channels in deeper water. When the lake freezes over, ice fishing is often a great way to catch a quick limit of crappie.

Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir Popular Fish - Yellow Perch

Yellow Perch Fishing

Sayers Lake continues to have a very healthy population of yellow perch thanks to its designation as a Panfish Enhancement Waterway. These tasty sunfish have been a mainstay in the fishery for decades. Yellow perch are a primary food source for many predator fish in the lake. Fishing for yellow perch is simple, their primary diet consists of minnows and other small fish, insects and worms. Yellow perch tend to gather in small groups and hang out on relatively deep structure, near cover and/or drop-offs. Use a small hook and sinker. Bait a small hook with minnows, worms or small jigs using 6 to 10 pound line. They make for an excellent fish fry, are a food source for many of the larger predator fish in the lake, and they are fun to catch in winter when ice fishing.

Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir Popular Fish - Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Smallmouth bass are a favorite of many locals at Sayers Lake, as they are tough fighters and exciting to catch. Fishing for smallmouth bass is good here, especially anytime they are shallow. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap. Around grass use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure with small worms, jigs and spoons. When the lake freezes over, try your luck at ice fishing. Largemouth bass also reside here in good numbers.
