Bass are predator fish that feeds on virtually any living thing in the water that is smaller than they are. That includes smaller bass. Its appeal is that bass are widespread across the country, relatively easy to catch when properly fished for, and they are great fighters giving the angler pleasure in catching them. Bass tend to concentrate in or near available cover where they can ambush their prey. There are many species and sub-species of bass with the two primary species being largemouth and smallmouth. Largemouth prefer warmer water while smallmouth prefer cooler water if given a choice. Anglers of any age can fish for bass in most warm water fisheries in all 50 states.

Bass Fishing

The fun of bass fishing is often enhanced by the fact that in clear water you can sometimes see the bass come out of the cover and attack lures. Bass can be caught on surface lures and down to 60 feet or deeper. No matter what type of lures you prefer to throw, at one time of the year or another bass can be caught on that particular lure or technique. For some the thrill of catching and landing the fish is the attraction. For others, the enjoyment comes from figuring out what’s going on, what the bass are doing and determining a method for catching on that particular day.

  • Knowledge of bass, their seasonal movements and how they live is crucial for fishing success.

When gathering information, focus your attention on information relative to “where” the bass are located, rather than focusing on “what” the writer happened to be using to catch them.
